Most of the time, people don’t feel any need for much contemplation before agreeing. From the beginning, have a talk with your student about what you hope to accomplish and how best to bring it into fruition. Define the limits and restrictions of topics, subjects to be taken, what the rules and procedures are including manners and behaviors, and how to go about it. Agree on the manner of communication – when and how? Phone or e-mail? What other methods, if any? Would you be available before, during or after business hours? The mentoring job should be for a definite time – six to 12 months or whatever might be agreed upon. Instill in their minds that mutual honesty will be the bedrock of your relationship. There is nothing trivial about mentoring; on the contrary it is a professional commitment that should be taken and discharged seriously.
Concentrate. Once you are faced with the job on hand, you should put your whole mind and body on the task ahead of you. When you are with your students, you owe them your whole attention.
Give assignments. Lay down specific assignments that have to be done between meetings. Give them problems to solve, issues to analyze, and similar activities that they should do in their idle time.
Give illustrations. Follow the truism that experience is the best teacher, in this case your experience, and that includes everything whether good or bad. Take time to explain your guiding principles and standards for them to emulate in their own way.
Lead them to the right path. Tell them of information materials out there for the taking – books, the internet and others that they can source and make full use of. In this manner, they will learn better ways of using their time and funds.
Let them be known to the public. Enhance their career prospects by taking advantage of every opportunity to speak highly of them in the presence of associates and friends.
Hype them up at every occasion. Speak highly of your apprentice in every occasion that arise, you will be paving their way to a successful future. Maintain confidentiality. On occasions your apprentice may open up to you about some subjects and his anxieties. They must feel secure in the knowledge that they can trust you when it comes to matters of confidentiality.
