Nebraska Huskers Look Strong

Huskers enthusiasts have seen this very situation before during the past four years.

There had been the Texas and USC situations in 2006, USC for a second time in ‘07, and then Virginia Tech this past season in Lincoln, all with the same result – the “Nebraska not ready for big athletes.”

The most recent time the Nebraska got the better of a ranked opponent on the road was during November 2006, when the Huskers squeaked by then-ranked No. 24 Texas A&M, 28-27, at Texas.

Although that was a distinct time, a different coach, and, more or less, different athletes.

Everybody knows that when you go up against a Frank Beamer franchise you expect nice execution on both sides of the ball, plus imposing play by special teams. They displayed that once more in their first game this year against Alabama.

The Crimson Tide outgained the Hokies by practically a two-to-one margin, but the team was only leading by a FG late in the 4th quarter because of a kickoff runback for a score.

The distinct factor that Nebraska fans have learned with this year’s franchise is that the botched assignments and out-of-position plays have just about vanished. There is less thinking on the defense and thus, more plays are being successfully executed because the athletes are reading and acting on this rather than thinking.

Head coach Bo Pelini now sees a franchise that completely understands the value of grinding it out.

This year, the team knows what it requires to be victorious. It realizes what its identity is on both offense and defense.

I really do feel that the Huskers have now broken through, and have the right players in the best positions pull off their first big away win in 3 years.

I see the Huskers coming out on top in a defensive, close contest in OT by a 27-24 score.
